The top is Arabic calligraphy of the first Quranic word that was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him): Read.

I wrote the poem “Female Muslim Scholars” based on how many Muslims tend to mostly refer to male figures when it comes to the Islamic scholarly sciences.

“Female Muslim Scholars”

Muslim scholars.
Female Muslim scholars.

How unbelievable,
unattainable
it
seems
for we
are not
raised to
know them.
To honour them.
To learn of them.

Their names,
their faces,
buried behind
a mirage,
one blended
with
our sense
of
montage.

They were
teachers,
guardians,
scholars.
Female Muslim scholars.

We are
taught to
only think
of
the men.

And among
them
were taught
by women.
Female Muslim scholars.

Is it
any
wonder
that there
continues
to be
some
pious men
with
patriarchal leanings,
patriarchal oppression,
even when
they have
good intentions?

Nay, for
few women
become scholars.

And we know
not the history of all scholars.
Female Muslim scholars.
